BOSTON, MA [Sept 30, 2013] - As a student in the Exploratory Program at Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School, Nicole was excited about the notion of being part of the culinary industry. But after a few recipe catastrophes and a minor fire, her instructor Tate Ostiguy remarked with a smile, “Cooking definitely wasn’t for her.” During her last week of the 9 week Exploratory Program, Nicole attended manufacturing courses. Tate noted, “She had a little glow in her eyes. She was really interested in what we were doing.” After spending a week in the machine shop, Nicole realized, “There is manufacturing involved in everything!” From then on, Nicole concentrated on the manufacturing program during her 4 years at Bay Path. By getting involved with BattleBots, SkillsUSA, the National Honor Society, and numerous other extracurricular activities and organizations, Nicole challenged herself to learn a variety of skills and gain experience in leadership positions and teamwork.
After graduating high school, Nicole made a critical decision that set her apart from her family members. With her determination to receive the training she needed to reach her goals, Nicole became the first person in her family to receive a post-secondary education. She attended Quinsigamond Community College and excelled in her machining and technology training. Breaking away from her family’s expectations demonstrated Nicole’s tenacity to remain focused on her career aspirations.
Steve Phillips, one of Nicole’s key instructors from Quinsigamond and his wife Cathy were delighted when Nicole accepted a job position as Quality Inspector at their company, Phillips Precision. “No two days are the same. I’m getting some more in-depth tasks at work that make it apparent that I am part of the Phillips Precision family,” Nicole remarked.
Steve and Cathy Phillips recognize Nicole’s ability to stay focused. Cathy observed that, “Nikki has a great desire to succeed… She went against the grain… She is not swayed or influenced by her peers.” Nicole’s determination to succeed and stay focused on her goals has led her on a journey of exploring new possibilities, recognizing her strengths, breaking new ground in her family, and finding the career pathway that was perfect for her. For Nicole, her future holds incredible opportunities.
