Larger Dreamliner Model Rolls Out

After troubles and tribulations, Boeing thinks its 787-9 program is on track. The longer version’s flight tests expected by end of September.

On August 24, 2013, Boeing announced in a press release the roll out of the first 787-9. First delivery to launch customer Air New Zealand is set for mid-2014, according to Boeing.

Boeing’s press release describes the plane as 20 feet (6 m) longer than the 787-8; the 787-9 will extend the 787 family in both capacity and range, carrying 40 more passengers an additional 300 nautical miles (555 km). The 787-9 leverages design of the 787-8 such as using 20% less fuel use and 20% fewer emissions than similarly sized airplanes.

CNET News (8/26, Cooper) writes that the “Company clears big hurdle with more advanced version of its touted aircraft after year marked by several mechanical issues….The company could use some good news. 2013 hasn't been a great year for Dreamliner sales. Boeing has had five new orders for passenger versions of the 747-8 but that has been offset by cancellations of five others. The Dreamliner project has also been marked by periodic setbacks, with some suggesting that profitability for the plane won't come until the 2020s.

Aviation Week (8/26, Norris) “The company plans to use three tests planes for the flight tests that will last “approximately six months.” Another plane will be used for “function and reliability work.” “ According to the article…”the “pressure is on Boeing” to have a smoother development process for this version of the plane than it did for the 787-8….Boeing currently holds 376 orders for the 787-9, or 40% of the total 787 firm orderbook of 936. The balance is made up of 510 787-8s and 50 of the recently-launched 787-10 ‘double-stretch’ derivative.”
