WESTEC 2013: Thermal Drilling Tools

Thermal drilling process will be demonstrated on a drill press, showing how easy it is to perforate metal using friction. Material that would normally be cut using a conventional drilling process is used to form a bushing that triples the material thickness. The bushing can then be tapped to form an insert and be used instead of welded nuts, threaded nipples and inserts. Parts can be designed with lighter/thinner materials and the process can be used in CNC or milling machines. Built-in inserts can be formed in UNC, UNF, NPT, metric and metric fine threads in steel, stainless, aluminum and copper from 0.032–0.25" (0.8–6.3-mm) thick.
