New Hotel Planned for McCormick Place
It won’t be ready in time for FABTECH 2013 or 2015, but when FABTECH returns to the Windy City in the latter half of this decade attendees will be able to take advantage of a new hotel near McCormick Place. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (nicknamed McPier) has announced plans for a new hotel that “will increase by 50% the number of guest rooms within walking distance of the city’s convention center.”
McPier is the state-chartered organization that owns McCormick Place, the 800-room McCormick Place Hyatt Regency (currently undergoing a 460-room expansion that will be completed in time for FABTECH 2013 in November) and Navy Pier.
The new 1200-room hotel will be just west of and connected by a skywalk to the convention center’s West Building. According to the Sun-Times, a spokesperson for McPier said that construction is likely to begin in late 2014 and should be completed in about two years.
The Chicago Tribune reported that “The McPier proposal comes as key parcels just north of the West Building are moving toward auction. Those sites have been viewed as potential locations for more hotels and entertainment, and possibly an arena for DePaul University's Blue Demons basketball team.”
