SME, Army Launch Pilot Program to Provide Engineering Certification for Veterans
Forbes reports that on July 9 "the Army launched a six-week pilot program, in coordination with the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, to provide military-to-civilian engineering certification for the tens of thousands of servicemen/women who will be exiting the Army over the coming years as the US winds down operations in both Iraq and Afghanistan." Pam Hurt, SME's industry manager for workforce development, said the "goal of the joint SME-Army program is to take those skills and training Joe/Jane Soldier learned during his or her time in the military, and translate that training into certifiable skills." After the "program, soldiers can earn their Lean Bronze Certification from SME through an exam. A pilot program is also in the works to create a one-year course for officers to earn their Certified Manufacturing Technologist certification."
The Detroit News also reported on the program.
