SME Past President Fossum to Serve as Interim Head of Medical Society
Barbara Fossum, Past President of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, has been chosen to serve as the interim CEO of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) in charge of the group’s offices in both Park Ridge, IL, and Washington, D.C. According to the ASA’s Dr. Jerry A. Cohen, “Fossum’s management qualifications and her specific association management experience made her the distinguished leader among candidates reviewed.”
She served as ASA’s interim Chief Operation Officer from October, 2007 through January, 2008, after which she worked with staff on governance and annual meeting preparation and implementation processes, and the support infrastructures. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation (SMEEF), and an active Past President (2010) of the Society. A Fellow of SME, she was the first woman president in the history of the 80-year-old society. She served on its Executive Committee; Executive Compensation Committee; Audit Committee; Director and Member Council Member Nominating Committee; Officer Nominating Committee; and the Finance Committee. Prior to becoming President, Fossum served multiple terms on the Board of Directors and in all officer positions. She holds a PhD in Operations and an MBA in Management from the University of Texas at Austin, an MSc, Mathematics, from Stevens Institute of Technology and a B.S., Physics, from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.
Fossum says she expects this job “to last from four to seven months, until the search for a full-time CEO is successful.”
