Airbus Expected to Announce First US Assembly Plant

Sources say that European-based Airbus SAS
plans to build its first full assembly line in the United States in Mobile, AL.  According to an anonymous source who spoke with the Associated Press, Airbus intends to build its A320 jet at the new location.

The move would be advantageous for several reasons.  It would allow Airbus to better compete with North American aircraft company Boeing, especially that company’s bestselling 737.  Airbus also already has a supply chain in the US and the move would bring the final product closer to consumers and allow Airbus to boast to US companies that their planes are locally made.  Another advantage would be lower production costs compared to the other A320 plants in Toulouse, France, and Hamburg, Germany.

Although no official announcement has been made yet, Airbus spokeswoman Mary Anne Greczyn has said, “We have made no secret of our hopes to expand our global footprint, including in the US as we have a very strong market here.”
