(DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 18, 2016) – Compelling examples of manufacturers involved in the most technologically advanced explorations of the universe, as well as human biological systems, are featured in this summer’s edition of Smart Manufacturing magazine. Created to educate and inform manufacturing professionals about the challenges and immense opportunities associated with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the quarterly magazine is published by SME’s Advanced Manufacturing Media. The digital version of this issue can be accessed at sme.org/smart.

“In this issue, we provide a timely account of U.S. companies taking the lead in a new fibers and fabrics innovation institute that promises to be revolutionary for aerospace and defense, transportation, manufacturing machinery, and medical textiles and scanners,” said Brett Brune, editor in chief of Smart Manufacturing. “Another story explains how bioprinting is helping researchers understand how cells work in the 3D space. Smart Manufacturing offers a unique, in-depth exploration of successful innovators and truly life-changing innovations in manufacturing.”

The magazine’s summer issue also takes a look at newer CNC control systems that feature improved touch-screen interfaces and better connectivity choices. And it chronicles how mobile robots at Scott Fetzer Electrical Group helped optimize production by 20 percent.

Additionally, guest columnist Bryce Barnes of Cisco writes about how automated, securely connected and digitized machines will help the most innovative aerospace and defense firms accelerate away from their competition while delivering high-quality, lower-cost components and assemblies. And Hexagon’s Joel Martin explains how 7DoF laser tracking technology and an EC-funded program to build a “Megarob” system moved industry closer to the “factory of the future.”
