Winning Design: Inspector Drone
Bridges are currently inspected by positioning a large crane on top of
the bridge deck. A team of engineers then use the crane’s cherry picker
to drop over the side to visually assess the condition of the bridge.

the Inspector Drone’s custom-made landing gear and rotor shields 3D
printed to extend the deployment time of the UAV, bridges could be
inspected remotely. This allows for a safe inspection of bridges without
the need to shut down traffic or hire cranes, operators and traffic
details. The savings realized by this modification can be used to
increase the dollars spent on actual bridge repairs and replacements,
creating an overall safer and more stable infrastructure.
